Saturday 23rd December – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington Marina

29.89 km., 14.71 knot alpha.
Starboard Freeride 150 and a Tushingham Storm 5.2.
We have just had the most wonderful week with our son Robert, his partner
Hannah and the Grandson Arlo which also included seval visits from our
other son Daniel, his partner Jay and the Granddaugher Maeva, pretty full
on at times with many walks and loads of crafts but it is just Mag and me
now so I could get out windsurfing again, I must admit that my enthusian
for winter sailing has certainly waned of late as the old body is not
liking the cold:( It was forecast to be sunny and fairly mild but windier
than I would have liked but after breakfast I decided to headed over to
Levington to make the most of the westerly breeze arriving at the marina at
9.20, trying to make the most of the 8 o clock high water, so it was not
ideal with the tide dropping but we to visit an old friend this afternoon
who is 84 today so it gave me plenty of time to have a couple of hours and
get home. I managed to park at our little launch beach by the marina
entrance which saved me walking my gear which was a result, the sun was out
and the foil board was quickly set up, now for the salil size lottery.
There was around 20 mph on the beach and it looked more in the middle of
the Orwell so took a chance with the 5.2 which was OK. I wanted to post a
decent hour for December but sadly this is not the best venue for that with
the winds being gusty and when using a small sail you get spells of
non-flying:( I started off well enough doing short runs across the corner,
then the wind allowed me to do a few nice runs down to Felixstowe docks
before the wind started to mess me about, I got some ok gybes in and at
least I managed to stay on the board so was warm for the whole session, I
did have my gloves on. My my arm getting tired and the tide dropping I
decided to call it a day and beat back with some pretty big gusts at time,
probably up to 30 knots! Pack up, shower and the short drive home, then a
nice afternoon weith Mary who was having a really nice Birthday:)
Not sure about tomorrow yet as supposed to be even windier and Christmas is
looking like there might be rain:(
